![]() The lyrics describing the holiday festivities of African Americans are not quite politically correct but this was how people talked about blacks back in the late 1930's. I believe Benny Goodman added the clarinet solo on Its Christmas Time in Harlem. Other songs I've listened to hundreds of times over the years are Grampa's Spells, The Harlem Drag, Santa Claus Blues, Nutcrakers and Oklahoma Stomp, among many others. Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf and Original Rags were played by modern artists. One of my favoriteswas the Basement Studio Stomp, written especially for the show. Rythm King was the song that opened the show. The Blackbirds of 1928 was a musical whose most remembered tune was 'Aint Misbehavin'. Dixieland jazz was also featured on Broadway. It was like sitting in some night club in 1924. Ben has worked with Gregory Porter, Radiohead, Blur, Amy Winehouse, Quincy Jones, Villagers, Matthew Herbert, Little Simz, Stan Tracey, George Michael, Matthew. Songs such as Moan you Moaners and Won't you come home Bill Bailey were performed in sultry broken English by their singer, Susanne Del Gato. ![]() One was in Connecticut and featured the Fenix jazz band from Argentina. Sometimes the show featured jazz events which were happening. The Red Rose Land Corn Pickers are German, I think. Het Fluet Gruet is a Scandanavian band which preforms excellent Dixieland such as the jazz tune Copenhagen. As is so often the case, American innovations get abandoned in this country and continue to exist abroad. They did traditional things such as the 12th street rag. The Firehouse Five was a jazz ensemble from the 1950's. Imagine the Marx Brothers as a jazz band with Harpo being the rythm section. Armstrong is best known for West End Blues and Morton of course is best known for Tiger Rag.
